Susannah Mason

Despite being called Mrs Mason on the monument, Susannah never married. In 1740 she set up a school for poor protestant girls using her own money and bequests left by her brother and sister. Known as the Girls Bluecoat School, it was located in nearby Lady Lane. Susannah died in 1752 at the age of sixty-five. Her memorial is one of two in the cathedral sculpted by Ireland’s leading eighteenth- century sculptor - John van Nost, the Younger (see no. 15).
