Cathedral Close

Bishop Hugh Gore (1613-1691) bequeathed £1,200 in his will towards the building of an Alms House
in Waterford City. The site on which the apartments were built is an historic one. When King John
landed in Waterford in 1210, he resided in a building on the site where the apartments are now. It
was originally intended that the apartments would provide a place for clergy widows to reside, the
trustees have since broadened the aims of the charity to cater for people of either sex and all
denominations.
