Reredos and Tetragrammaton

Behind the altar lie three panels of stucco work. It has been suggested that the side panels predate the central, possibly da ng from the seventeenth century. A sunburst in the central panel contains the Tetragrammaton - the Hebrew le ers YHWH. This stands for the word Yahweh or Jehovah, the holy and unu erable name of God from the Hebrew Bible. It is a reminder of Chris anity’s roots in the biblical tradi on of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Of note,thecathedral’sornamenta ondoesnotfeatureapermanentdepic onofthecross.
