Bishop's Throne
A cathedral is a church which contains the seat (or cathedra) of a bishop, and serves as the head church of a diocese. Established in 1096, Waterford is Ireland’s second-oldest diocese. Owing to its small geographic size, Waterford was merged with the neighbouring diocese of Lismore in 1363, and underwent several other mergers a er the Reforma on. Christ Church has been a cathedral in the United Dioceses of Cashel and Ossory since 1977, which spans a large area of south-eastern Ireland, and its bishop resides in Kilkenny.
