A fine example of neo classical Georgian Architecture

The present Georgian Cathedral is built upon the ruins of a Medieval Cathedral built by the Normans in 1210.

During the late 1700's, this building was falling into disrepair. The progressive corporation and congregation of the time wanted a new bright and airy Cathedral more in keeping with the fashion for neo-classical architecture which was very much in vogue at the time. It was demolished in 1773 to make way for the current structure which used the rubble of the original cathedral in its construction.

Some of the foundations of the medieval Cathedral still remain under the floor of the present building. One of these pillars has been exposed for viewing in the Ante-Chapel of the Church.
