Christ Church Cathedral's organ was designed
by Thomas Elliot and installed in 1817 by Alexandra Buckingham in
a position close to its current site. In 1889 the organ was moved
to the north east corner of the nave and remained there until 2002.
From here the sound did not carry well, the organ fell into disrepair
and was inoperable for almost sixty years until its restoration by
Kenneth Jones in 2002.
In 2002 the internationally renowned organ builder Kenneth Jones
set about rebuilding the organ, at the west end of the nave, close
to the original siting of the organ.
In 2003 an inaugural concert by organ virtuoso Peter Sweeney was
held to celebrate the magnificent Elliot-Jones organ. The organ
is used weekly for service and concert organ recitals are included
in Christ Church Cathedral's music programme. For more information
